Euro-Mediterranean Foundation of Support to Human Rights Defenders (EMHRF)

The EMHRF allocates small scale and flexible funds to human rights defenders in the South-Mediterranean region.

Grants are allocated to human rights defenders in difficulty or at risk, for the specific purpose of allowing them to pursue their activities, as well as to small organizations and groups with the aim of strengthening their capacities in implementing innovative and/or sensitive projects in the region.

Types of interventions

·         Urgent interventions in support of defenders facing difficulties or at risk

Emergency, tangible and secure support is provided to human rights defenders in difficulty or at risk as a result of their activities in the region. Urgent grants are subjected to a 5,000 € ceiling and the period of support may not exceed 12 months.

·         Capacity building and standard interventions in support of innovative/sensitive projects

Medium and long term financial support is provided to small human rights organisations, structures and defenders by reinforcing their capacities in order to enable them to create structures or implement innovative and/or sensitive activities effectively in the region. Standard grants are subjected to a 40,000 € ceiling and the period of support may not exceed 18 months.
